COVID-19 in Garment Workers in Bangladesh

Garment Factories and Textile Mills in Dhaka, Bangladesh

From 2020 to 2022, Integral Global Consulting implemented an evidence-based COVID-19 community mitigation program in three pilot factories in Dhaka, Bangladesh. IGC and collaborators in-country developed a standardized COVID-19 Safety Program package, with specific guidelines and protocols, which can be disseminated to other mills and factories through the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).

Partnership

Various partners were engaged in the implementation and introduction of the project in- country. This was seen in lobbying practices, signing MOUs, and maintaining close communication with relevant stakeholders and government officials.

Survey

A baseline sample survey was conducted to determine the workers’ knowledge and practice level of COVID-19 prevention practices. 3797 total workers participated, with 20% knowledge, 50% aptitude, and 30% practice level recorded.

Screening

Over 4465 workers were screened for COVID-19 symptoms and interviewed on best behavior practices (wearing masks, sanitizing, and social distancing). This was in support and collaboration with government health centers.

Education

Health education messages about COVID-19 prevention and protection measures were dispersed to factory workers through flyers and posters to spread community-level awareness.
