Chemical Incident Response in Southeast Asia

Analytical Toxicology, Recognition of Chemical Security Threats, and International Communication in the East Asia Pacific (EAP) Region

Integral Global Consulting, in partnership with Emory University and the Middle East and North African Toxicology Association (MENATOX), conducted its Recognition and Initial Management of Illness Clusters (RIMIC) course and Chemical Security Roundtable for participants and speakers from Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. This initiative aimed to enhance regional collaboration among professionals in the fields of medical toxicology and emergency medicine. The RIMIC course equips participants with the skills necessary to identify and characterize clusters and outbreaks of patients during chemical and toxicological incidents. The attendees participated in sessions on CBRN response, toxidrome recognition, and ASEAN case studies at the 2024 Asia Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology (APAMT) Scientific Congress. Through multi-country discussions and presentations, new toxicological approaches were explored, highlighting the importance of security and sustainability. The team also had the opportunity to visit Penang’s poison center and learn about its prevent, detect, and respond capabilities for toxicological cases. IGC would like to thank the U.S. Department of State’s Chemical Security Program (CSP) for its technical input and CRDF Global for its logistical support in implementing this engagement.
